Leica S2 je naprostou novinkou na poli středoformátové digitální fotografie a vlajkovou lodí společnosti Leica. Snímač digitální zrcadlovky Leica S2 je typu CCD a má rozměry 30 x 45 mm a pochází od firmy Kodak. Chlubí se rozlišením 37,5 Mpx. Svými rozměry převyšuje o 56% klasický full-frame formát (24 x 36 mm) snímače. Fotoaparát Leica S2 je osazen obrazovým procesorem MAESTRO, který pro firmu Leica zhotovila společnost Fujitsu. Aparát je konstruován jako DSLR - tedy ergonomika přístroje je jako u běžného full frame aparátu. Pro model S2 byla vyvinuta zcela nová řada objektivů “S” - konkrétně 35mm, 70mm, 120mm a 180mm. Objektivy 35mm a 70mm jsou navíc vyráběny ve verzi s centrální závěrkou. Na těle aparátu nalezneme také velmi přehledný 3” LCD a veškeré ovládací prvky jsou vytvořeny pro maximální komfort a jednoduchost ovládání.

The entire system is based on a totally new image sensor in Leica S-Format, 30 x 45 mm in size and the classic Leica aspect ration of 3 to 2. The large area and integrated design afford optimal picture quality. With 37.5 million pixels, cropping is never a problem, even for large-format prints.
